Mississippi Man’s Podcast Aims to Inspire Men to Be ‘Real’ | Mississippi News

From MAYA MARTIN, The Oxford Eagle

OXFORD, miss. (AP) – Josh McGlawn aims to bring men from all walks of life together and work on their mental, emotional and spiritual development through his video podcast Real Talk for Real Men.

One of five Heartland Forward Builders + Backers in Oxford, McGlawn has received a $ 5,000 scholarship to help accelerate his idea of reaching men everywhere.

McGlawn is a member of the Young Professionals of Oxford Board and heard about the program at a YPO event. It sounded like something he would be interested in, so with the help of Jon Maynard and Allen Kurr of the Lafayette County Oxford Chamber of Commerce, he applied and became part of the cohort.

“Builders + Backers came up with their Idea Accelerator program and it was the perfect timing,” he said. “It took me to a whole ‘other level’.”

This podcast may be a new idea for McGlaw, but he’s familiar with entrepreneurship.

“I’m a jack of all trades,” said McGlaw. “I do so many different things. (My brother and sister-in-law) call me a serial entrepreneur. I’ve had my hand in so many companies all my life. “

The serial entrepreneur is currently working full-time in his family’s construction company and has his own renovation company. With years of experience, McGlawn wanted to try and make a podcast about toxic masculinity and other issues that plague men in the community.

In June 2020, he started a men’s group on Facebook that laid the foundation for the podcast, and six months later, McGlawn created his podcast and published his first episode.

“I came up with Real Talk with Real Men to give myself a way to talk about (men’s) emotions and feelings,” he said. “We can’t talk about things like that because they’re kind of taboo.”

McGlawn describes Real Talk as a service or organization that discusses a wide range of topics such as mental health, marriage, business, and more.

The podcast features guests who are expert or very knowledgeable on these topics who can bring a different perspective and that the audience gets the right information. McGlawn wanted other men to have mentors, like he had in his father and friends, and access to outlets that would allow them to be more open.

“We don’t have a safe space to talk about things because the stigma surrounding men says it’s not okay to express ourselves,” he said. “We have to be tough and tough and it’s not okay for us to express our emotions. I want to say, ‘It’s okay to talk about real problems, be it at home or at work.’

McGlawn said the biggest takeaway from this podcast was a recognition that progress is slow.

“My co-host Marquel ‘Steadfast’ Smith told me, ‘Don’t despise small beginnings. Don’t be afraid to start small and build it up “because I tried to shoot for the stars on the first day, but I had to learn to trust the process. It won’t happen overnight. “

McGlawn’s next move is to keep the podcast going for as long as possible and replicate the model everywhere to address toxic masculinity and stigma issues against men everywhere.
