Join the Jamaican Women of Florida (JWOF) on Saturday September 18 for our annual virtual health and wellness forum. During Covid-19, many women and girls faced several health concerns. We will discuss two important issues related to women’s health, domestic violence and period poverty. The FREE event is now in its eighth year and will be virtual this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
JWOF supports UNICEF in raising awareness of period poverty in Jamaica. The participants will have a moderated discussion with Shelly-Ann Weeks, founder and managing director of the HerFlow Foundation. Ms. Weeks has led efforts to end period poverty in Jamaica. With support from local and international donors and sponsors, her organization has donated over 200,000 packs of menstrual products to schools, prisons and health centers across the island. #endperiodpovertyja
Our second spokesperson, Marcia Barry-Smith, is a local community attorney and CEO of MBS Consulting Services. Marcia is a self-proclaimed domestic violence winner who has worked tirelessly in our community for women’s rights and affordable housing. Domestic violence affects women and girls at alarming levels, and these rates have increased since the Covid-19 pandemic devastated our communities.
The Health and Wellness Summit has continued to attract large audiences due to its significant information sharing on the health and wellbeing of our families. According to Vice President Dr. Monique Blake-Roswell, this year’s summit is in line with JWOF’s commitment to empowering women, “to raise awareness in our community of resources that support domestic violence survivors and help eradicate period poverty in Jamaica.”
The three-hour forum takes place on Zoom and is free to the public and includes a question-and-answer period. All proceeds collected during the event will be donated to the HerFlow Foundation to buy menstrual products and eradicate period poverty in Jamaica.
