A Melbourne doctor gave women a terrifying warning about the effects of coronavirus during pregnancy when the state recorded 450 new infections.

The Victorian numbers continue to rise as the government announced new rules on Saturday that will allow pregnant women to get priority access to vaccinations.

Doctors are increasingly concerned about the number of expectant mothers in hospital with Covid symptoms.

Ryan Hodges, a leading expert on complex pregnancies, is part of a team that gives birth to more than 10,000 babies annually.

He is alarmed by the number of pregnant women who have to be hospitalized for Covid.

He said Monash Women’s was treating seven pregnant women with Covid infection.

“And I’m here today on behalf of my team to let you know that we are very concerned,” said Hodges.

He added that the effects of the coronavirus are more severe than those of influenza and he would “never” have seven pregnant women to be treated in his hospital for the flu.

As part of the government’s new program, women 24 weeks or older will be classified as a priority group to be vaccinated at government centers.

They are given priority access in accordance with healthcare and elderly care workers.

Hodges said the Pfizer vaccine is completely safe for pregnant women and does not increase the risk of miscarriages or other health problems in their unborn child.

“We now have a lot of very sick women who are at a very high risk of their babies being born prematurely,” he said.

“We know that coronavirus infection during pregnancy is five times more likely that you will have to come to us in Monash.

“And when you come to see us in Monash, there is a one in three chance that you will need oxygen therapy. The chance you’ll be in intensive care is one in seven, a one-in-two chance that you will need an emergency birth for your baby.

“The chance of a caesarean is one in two and a one in four chance that your baby will have to be born prematurely.”

Meanwhile, dozens of new exposure sites across Victoria have been put on alert after the state registered another 450 new infections.

Just a day after most of regional Victoria came out of lockdown, new locations far from Melbourne were listed.

Health Minister Martin Foley stressed that there was no plan to reinstate lockdown measures in the Victoria area.

There were eight cases in the Victoria region, five of them from Geelong, three of them with construction sites.

There was one case each in Cohuna, Daylesford and Beveridge.

Foley said most of the cases have been linked to the transfer in metropolitan Melbourne.

An employee at a cafe in Daylesford, about 100 km northwest of Melbourne, was working on Jan.

Of the new cases reported on Saturday, only 75 were related to known cases and outbreaks.

A total of 39,148 vaccines have been administered and 42,765 test results have been received in the past 24 hours.

Seventeen people had to be hospitalized with Covid-19 symptoms in the past 24 hours.

The total number of people in the state hospitalized with the virus is 34, with 26 on a ventilator.

For the fourth straight year, Victoria has seen a record number of vaccinations in state clinics, with 39,140 people receiving the vaccination in state centers.

If you include those who were vaccinated at general practitioners and pop-up clinics, the total was around 87,000.

“We are now at 65.2 percent of the eligible Victorian population over the age of 16 who have received a first dose as we approach that 70 percent first dose milestone,” said Foley.
