On Politics: When it comes to COVID-19 and fans in University of Hawaii stands, Gov. Ige remains unmalleable

Mahalo for helping Honolulu Star Advertiser. Have fun with this free story!

Today’s unpronounceable word is “informable”. It’s the perfect word because it’s the ultimate political quality.

Non-malleable is a personality trait that I think about: “What makes David Ige so non-malleable?”

The word means “unable to be influenced, convinced or controlled”. This sounds exactly like the qualities you’re looking for when looking for someone to run the state.

Someone who is adamant would not bow to special interests, someone whose integrity could not be twisted or distorted, someone who stood upright in the face of a political crisis.

What a shame, “unformable” also means something “difficult or impossible to shape or work on”.

People who are not malleable are viewed as “unruly”, as in “difficult to handle or shape; “A stubborn disposition”; or “persistent pain”.

In fighting the COVID-19 virus, Ige shows “undeformable” strength and strength as he refuses to bow in his protection of the health of the community.

And if he refuses to listen to rational arguments to allow a paltry number of sports fans access to the University of Hawaii temporary sports complex on campus to watch the game of the state’s only Division 1 soccer team, he is “stubborn” and also a pain.

The level of discomfort Ige can cause was assessed last week by Lt. Gov. Josh Green clarified when the part-time emergency room doctor refused to back off his call to Ige to at least open UH soccer – the only big boys soccer team in the country that doesn’t allow fans to be on the school grounds to sit.

“I think if possible we should go back to something normal, like having fans at outdoor sporting events when they are vaccinated and wearing masks. We should follow science and make decisions that way, ”Green replied to my question.

“People’s mental health includes reunions, social activities, and a degree of confidence that they can provide for their children through work. This is the daily consideration I try to share with the governor and the team, ”said Green.

Last week, House Speaker Scott Saiki joined in when he formally asked Ige to open UH’s Ching Stadium for the weekend’s home game.

“Admitting few viewers will show other states that Hawaii is returning to normal, but in a much more prescribed way,” Saiki said in a letter to Ige.

The governor has led an enchanting political life, having been selected out of nowhere by Governor George Ariyoshi to fill a vacancy in the state house in 1985, and then becoming almost indisputably a state legislature for decades before making political history by serving the Acting Governor Neil Abercrombie. angry in the 2014 gubernatorial election.

During his two terms in office, Ige has dealt with natural and self-inflicted disasters, but none have had the impact of the COVID-19 virus and the resulting economic collapse of the state.

So far, Ige has proven that he is able to hold on to stubbornness if he should bend over and listen to reason and ask the question of “malleability” correctly. It’s his choice.
