Gazette Top 5 Taunton Stands With Tom Coffee Day real estate detour

Before we get into this new week in earnest, let’s take a look back at the past week and the stories that have preoccupied our readers the most. From “Taunton Stands With Tom” to National Coffee Day to traffic news, these were the stories that led the news of Gazette readers for the past week:

‘Taunton stands with Tom’

Wondering what those lawn signs all over town that read “Taunton Stands With Tom” are for? They are a token of support for Tom Anderson, who was standing in his own garden in June 2020 when a stranger with a homophobic nickname knocked out two of his front teeth. The signs feature the rainbow colors of a pride flag, as well as the light blue and pink colors associated with transgender pride.

“You are really cute,” said Anderson. “It’s very comforting to see so many people working hard to show their support.”

Tom Anderson, standing, was reportedly punched in the face by Michael Cates. He is pictured here with his husband Jacob.

Gazette reporter Chris Helms has the story here, including information on how to get a sign if you want one.

National Coffee Day

Don’t let the fact that National Coffee Day is over get you down: there’s a slight chill in the air, so the latte season is still in full swing!

Whether you prefer your coffee hot, chilled or seasoned with pumpkin, we have a compilation of the Gazette readers’ favorite places to have a cup of coffee – in Taunton and beyond.

In 2019 Stephanie Connors bought Cafe Milano at 67 Main Street in downtown Taunton and renamed it Stephanie's. It was her lifelong dream to run her own café.

A 2 mile detour

Some traffic news got pretty … well, traffic over the past week. There was a significant detour on Route 44 West last week – a 2 mile detour to be precise – with the nightly closure of the ramp from 44 West onto Route 24 South.

This diversion is for drivers using the 44 westbound to head south on the 24th from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. from Monday, September 27th to Thursday, September 30th, 2021.

It was all part of the larger Route 44 over Route 24 bridge replacement project. Let’s look at the positive side: road repairs are a good thing in the long run.
