DETROIT – Henry Ford Health System and Michigan State University have been working together since January to launch new health and research initiatives.
The partnership took another step and committed to another 30 years as it announced new plans to expand research, cancer care, education and medical services for a just childbirth, officials said.

Henry Ford Health + Michigan State University Health Sciences have also released a new brand logo. It combines the colors of both institutions and demonstrates “the strength of two national leaders joining forces to achieve the goal of major health care improvements,” officials said.
“Since our meeting in January, we’ve mobilized an amazing team across all of our facilities who are already making changes to improve health care and address the health inequalities that plague our most vulnerable rural and urban communities,” Wright said L. Lassiter, Henry Ford President / CEO of Health Systems, said in a statement. “Together we use our best resources and expertise to advance our mission and have the power to be truly transformative for our patients, doctors and communities.”
The partnership’s efforts to advance research and empower future health care leaders address “tomorrow’s health care needs,” said MSU President Samuel Stanley.
“We are excited about the innovative work that has already been done through our partnership and the support we are already offering our students, alumni, faculty and staff,” he said. “This is an exciting time to rethink how our two world-class institutions think, innovate, and deliver health and wellness across the state of Michigan and across the country.”
The Henry Ford-MSU partnership so far has focused on strengthening their clinical care, education and research initiatives, the press release said. These include:
- Henry Ford Health is sending 115 researchers to MSU to work at the university, creating “new synergies for collaboration and innovative research”.
- Secured $ 8 million in active funding from the National Cancer Institute in both institutions. More than 100 scientists from the health system and the university formed a working group on cancer research, and a joint symposium in August showed how cancer researchers, clinicians and administrators can work together.
- The obligation to provide education to a diverse pool of health care providers and to ensure equitable access to health care for “historically disenfranchised and marginalized populations”.
- The Health Alliance Plan and MSU Health Care Plans are working together to provide approximately 100,000 Medicare-eligible MSU alumni HMO and PPO plans with zero dollar rewards.
- Henry Ford Health introduces Dr. Richard Leach, a national in vitro fertilization expert and MSU researcher, as Chair of the Women’s Health Services Division of the Health System. Leach will continue to serve in his current roles at MSU.
- Henry Ford Health screened MSU athletes for COVID-19 complications, including the heart-based diseases myocarditis and pericarditis. These demonstrations made the athletes free to participate in sports.
