Europe’s 2016 Ryder Cup captain discusses the upcoming game in Whistling Straits
Ahead of the Ryder Cup in Whistling Straits, we met Europe’s 2016 captain Darren Clarke.
Clarke made five appearances for Team Europe between 1997 and 2006 and was on the winning side on four of those five occasions.
In this exclusive Q&A, the Northern Irishman spoke about his compatriot Rory McIlroy, his captaincy, the Brooks / Bryson feud and much more.
Do you think Rory McIlroy will make it into the Ryder Cup despite another season without a major?
Rory is a real leader for the team and I’m sure we can count on him to do what he has to.
He’s the most talented player in the world and he knows what’s required this week.
He will be really looking forward to it, I’m sure of that.
Do you regret your captaincy in 2016?
You just can’t think like that.
Obviously, if asked about that, I would have wished for a different result, but we have to accept that the Americans were the better team this week.
Would you like to be a captain again?
It was a great honor to be the Ryder Cup captain, but I think this was my time.
There are so many experienced players out there who will keep an eye on it for the next several years that I think you will only get one try.
How crucial is home advantage in the Ryder Cup?
It is undoubtedly a factor, but it is not something that cannot be overcome as we have seen time and time again.
I’m sure the American fans will be as passionate as ever, but the European guys will have to deal with it and enjoy it.
Does Europe have an advantage after the Brooks / Bryson feud?
I don’t think that’s going to have much of an impact on things.
Only the two of them know what’s going on and I’m sure Steve Stricker and the team will find a way to work around any problems.
I don’t see it being a factor when Friday comes.
Would you like to see an official Ryder Cup for seniors?
Absolutely.
The level among the seniors is very good and I think people would have a lot of fun watching it.
Did the Americans have too many wild cards?
It is a lot, but is it too much? These are the things that come out of washing depending on the result.
That’s the way they went, but they’re all very good players so we’ll see, won’t we?
What will Harrington be like as a captain?
I am sure that he will be very well prepared and that after such a long wait it will be itchy to get started now!
I’ve known him for a long time and he was vice captain when I was captain in 2016.
How does Stricker become a captain?
Steve is a real gentleman and I’m sure he will be a great captain too.
Will the US miss Tiger Woods as both a player and runner-up?
There’s so much anticipation for this Ryder Cup because it feels like it’s been so long, but not having Tiger there undoubtedly takes a whiff of any event. We all wish him all the best.
What made you choose Darren Clarke CBD?
Darren Clarke CBD was an opportunity I couldn’t miss.
I believe we have a strong product that can help golfers in many ways and I’ve had some great feedback on it.
For me, it has especially helped with recovery, but there are many benefits. I wanted to offer the consumer a quality product that they can trust.
What effects have you noticed from Darren Clarke CBD?
CBD oil has undoubtedly helped my game, especially when it came to recovering between rounds.
It’s easy to get tired and sore playing a four day tournament, but I’m sure using CBD this week helped negate that, and I’ve never slept better either.
