Unless you’re an early riser, you may have wondered how people do it (and why!). We picked the brain of Liz Plosser, Editor-in-Chief of Women’s Health and author of the new book Own Your Morning, to learn more about how to be a morning person and make the most of the first part of the day.
Own Your Morning: Reset Your Morning Routine To Unleash Your Potential
What does it mean to “have your own tomorrow”?
There is no perfect way to spend your morning. It looks beautifully different for each of us. What is universal, however, is that there are a number of core values - people, places, things – that drive you to get your morning off to the right start. For me it’s fitness, family time, lots of coffee and working with my team from Women’s Health. If you can incorporate these types of micro-moments into your morning, you can be your healthiest, happiest self for the rest of the day.
Why is this routine important at any age?
I think it’s a good idea to reassess these core values over the course of life – no matter how old you are or what phase of life you are in. You don’t have to get up early to have a nice morning either. I talk to my kids about it so they can find things that make them happy before they go to school.
Share a few of your morning tricks.
When training, I follow the four-minute rule. Science suggests that it takes your body four minutes to get used to an exercise, so I tell myself that if after four minutes I still don’t feel it, I can stop – and I’ve never stopped!
Another fitness tip is to think about who you are in the future. I know that I’m much more confident, calm, and clear when I’m sweating and getting my endorphins going. I can better deal with all the twists and turns the day will have ahead of me. When my alarm goes off at 5:17 a.m. and I think it would be so nice to hit the snooze function, I remind myself that future Liz will be so much better for it.
When I was eating, I realized that it was about the ritual. When I wasn’t drinking caffeine, I drank decaf coffee and learned that I loved grinding the coffee beans and the feeling of a warm cup in my hands.
Do you have evening tricks to help you get up early?
I never jump out of bed at 5:17 am, but it’s a lot easier when I have a good night’s sleep. When I wake up before bed, I have a hot shower, stretch, or meditate so I am better prepared when the alarm goes off. Another game changer is to prepare for what you want to do in the morning the night before. For example, pull out your outfit the night before for a workout. It will make your morning life easier when you are still light-headed.
Which habits really hold?
Everything that makes me feel full and gives me pleasure: listening to music to boost my energy and intention, caffeine, cuddling with my children. I carry the energy of these moments into my day – it makes me a better manager, teammate, wife and friend.
