Grantham farming family spearheads future of CBD oil production in UK

A fourth generation Grantham farming family leads the future of UK cannabidiol (CBD) oil production.

Mike and Jackie Lamyman founded Crop England in 2019, a company that makes and sells high quality CBD oils and teas aimed at promoting happy and healthy lives.

To make the products, they use hemp grown on their farm after discovering the benefits of CBD oil for health and wellbeing.

This led her to meet Jimmy Ward and Helena Barratt, who together have over 50 years of experience in the CBD and hemp industries. By combining their relative experience, they have set themselves on a mission to develop a high quality range of hemp and CBD products.

Hemp is one of the oldest known crops in the world and was cultivated over 10,000 years ago.

It contains a very wide range of cannabinoids, including CBD, and very small amounts of the psychoactive cannabinoid THC, which will get you high. Cannabis is a relative of hemp, but contains very high levels of
THC.

CBD is a single cannabinoid and while it is perhaps the best known, it is only one of over 100 cannabinoids found in various amounts in hemp.

Michael and Jackie, 52 and 42 years old respectively, have been growing hemp for three years. With their agricultural know-how, the Lamymans take a multi-level approach to improving the soil and plant health of their farm.

This is important because many competitors use poor quality CBD, which contains levels of THC, ethanol, solvents, and even heavy metals in excess of what is required by law.

Michael spoke in more detail about the benefits of CBD oil and the story of how he and Jackie started farming
it.

How Did You Discover The Benefits Of CBD Oil?

In 2017/2018, Jackie and I had read a lot of press comments about CBD oil and we started researching it so we could understand how it works and what effects it has.

I hoped it would help me get better sleep and Jackie hoped it would help restore balance as she had a full time job trying to look after three children at the same time.

We learned how our endocannabinoid system affects the optimal functioning of our bodies and how taking CBD oil can restore imbalances and improve health.

How did you get into agriculture?

We were concerned about the numerous press reports about bad sales in the CBD industry, especially about the CBD content not at the marketed level and also about poor quality hemp seed oil with potentially high levels of toxins. So we wondered if we could do better by growing it on the farm and offering full traceability and transparency.

We discovered that not only is it possible to grow it in our climate and soil type, but it also has excellent environmental and soil health certificates.

We therefore applied to the Ministry of the Interior for a license for the cultivation and fortunately received a three-year license. We are now in our third season so we will try to renew our license shortly.

What were the greatest challenges?

From an agricultural perspective, the biggest challenge is harvesting them. This is because it is a lush crop with an extremely strong fibrous stem, making it difficult to thresh the seeds out of the plant and also the stem can wrap around the combine drum and clog it.

When we bring the seeds back to our garden, we have to dry them very quickly so that they don’t go moldy.

We therefore had to buy another “header” combine that would strip the seeds from the stem instead of cutting off the stem.

From a regulatory perspective, it was recently classified as a “novel food” by the Food Standards Agency, so we had to design our processing area to meet all regulations.

Since hemp is not commonly grown in the UK, it has generally been difficult to seek advice so we have to do much of our own research.

We also had to try to educate many people who are not sure whether to use it and also have concerns about its association with cannabis.

What are the main benefits of CBD oil?

There is a large amount of research on CBD that explains that it helps stimulate our endocannabinoid system, which interacts with our central nervous system. Numerous reports state that it has a wide range of effects, from promoting a sense of calm to anti-inflammatory to pain relief, to restoring sleep patterns and promoting the proper functioning of our immune systems.

What would you say to anyone who hasn’t tried CBD oil?

Our website (www.cropengland.co.uk) has a lot of helpful information about CBD in general.

For those who have never tried it before, we offer a “Trial Kit” that allows our customers to explore CBD ingestion, starting with a very low dose of our mildest strength, and then over a period of three weeks to work up to our maximum strength.

We provide a dosage schedule and diary that our clients can use to record their feelings during the three week trip so they can determine which strength suits them best.
