Common Athlete Injuries and How To Avoid Them

When we hear about athletes, we usually only think of one thing – sport! While many of us enjoy doing sports, athletes, whether amateurs or professionals, are on a different level. Not only do they have an extreme passion for what they do, but they also have the physical strength, stamina, and psychological traits that qualify them to compete in their field.

Being an athlete is good, but there is definitely a risk of getting injured. While athletes are cautious and master their craft, all sports carry risks of injury ranging from superficial bruises and sprains to severe ones such as broken bones and concussions.

Athlete injuries are unpredictable and many factors can contribute. This can be due to a lack of fitness, overtraining, trauma from contact with other athletes, overuse or abuse of a body part. These and other reasons are potential risk factors for athlete injury, and these inevitable circumstances often lead to situations that can cause minor to significant health problems.

Prevent sports injuries

Note that there are things you can do to help prevent sports injuries. Here are some:

  • Always warm up before the game and cool down afterwards.
  • Avoid attending if you are injured.
  • Maintain good muscle strength and flexibility.
  • Practice stability training, including balance exercises.
  • Wear protective equipment such as protective pads and helmets.
  • Know the rules of the game.
  • Watch out for uneven surfaces when walking or running.
  • Watch out for other players.
  • Listen to your trainer during a game.

Frequent sports injuries

There are different types of sports injuries that result from different sports and activities. Here are the most common ones seen in many sports players:

  • Ankle sprain. This type of injury is the most common that can happen to anyone, especially among athletes who are constantly on the move during training and competitions. This occurs when you twist, roll, or twist your ankle in the wrong direction, causing injury to your ligaments. These tough bands of tissue are responsible for holding the bones in your ankles and stabilizing your joints. If they stretch beyond their limits and move out of their normal position, it will result in a sprain. This injury is characterized by pain, tenderness, swelling, bruising, and restricted mobility. An ankle sprain can be treated with rest and other home remedies if it’s not severe. In rare cases, surgery and rehabilitation are required.
  • Groin strain. This condition is widespread among professional and recreational athletes. It does this by putting strain on the muscles, causing the inside of the thigh or the front of the hip to overstretch or tear. This injury is characterized by pain felt anywhere from the hip to the knee and difficulty walking or moving the leg away from or towards the body. You can calmly treat groin strains as they will usually heal on their own.
  • Thigh injury. Also known as a pulled hamstring, is a common injury that occurs when the muscles in the back of your thigh stretch too far and start to tear. This can be divided into three categories: pulling or tugging the muscle fibers, partially tearing or completely tearing the muscle. Athletes suffering from this injury may experience mild pain that usually takes a short time to recover, or they may experience severe pain that may require surgery.
  • Cruciate ligament tear. This type of injury is most common among athletes who play sports that involve sudden stops or changes of direction, such as soccer, basketball, soccer, and skiing. This injury occurs when your anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is helping to connect your femur to your tibial tears. This is often characterized by severe pain, rapid swelling, and restricted mobility. Depending on the severity of the injury, it may be treated with rehabilitation and rest or, in severe cases, surgery may be required to replace the torn ligaments.

  • Holy basil – Also known as tulsi, this herb does not resemble the basil commonly used in cooking.
