Biden receives his Covid-19 booster shot: Vaccines ‘can save your life and … can save the lives of those around you’

“We know that in order to defeat this pandemic and save lives we have to get people vaccinated,” Biden said during remarks before his shot. “So please, please do the right thing. Please take these pictures. It can save your life and it can save the lives of the people around you.”

The president received his first two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine before his inauguration in January. The 78-year-old president qualified for a booster dose because he received his second Pfizer / BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine more than six months ago and is in an appropriate age group.

The president said first lady Jill Biden would soon be getting a booster shot too, but she was absent Monday afternoon – the president said she was teaching. The First Lady is a professor at Northern Virginia Community College outside of Washington.

Biden joked on Monday that he was over 65, which is one of the reasons he is eligible for inclusion. He said he had no side effects after his first or second vaccination against Covid-19.

“Boosters are important, but the most important thing we need to do is get more people vaccinated,” said Biden.

He noted that Americans who are fully vaccinated are already well protected from serious illnesses and urged people who did not get their first vaccinations to do so as soon as possible.

The president said, “The vast majority of Americans are doing the right thing. About 77% of adults have gotten at least one injection, an awful lot of damage for the rest of the country. “

“This is a pandemic for the unvaccinated. That’s why I make the vaccination compulsory wherever I can, ”said Biden.

The president said Wednesday he would travel to Chicago to discuss why he believes it is so important for more and more companies to introduce their own vaccine requirements.

Early Friday morning, the director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, from the agency’s independent vaccine advisors, to recommend boosters for a wider group of people – those aged 18 to 64 who are at increased risk from Covid-19 due to their workplace or institutional setting – in addition to older adults, residents of long-term care facilities, and some people with underlying health problems.

The CDC recommendation includes the recommendations of its Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices Thursday when it voted to recommend booster vaccinations for people 65 years of age and older and residents of long-term care facilities who received the Pfizer / BioNTech Covid-19 series of vaccines at least six months ago and People aged 50 to 64 with previous illnesses.

The CDC also endorsed the vaccine advisors’ recommendation that people aged 18 to 49 with pre-existing conditions can receive a booster dose based on their individual benefits and risks.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration last week issued emergency approval for a booster dose of Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine for people 65 years of age and older, people at high risk of serious illness, and people whose work puts them at risk of infection.

Biden spoke last week about the next phase of his administration’s plan to fight the Covid-19 pandemic and contain the Delta variant after the CDC issued its recommendations on booster vaccinations. He stressed that all guidance on boosters was left to scientists and doctors to determine, and that its administration had always been ahead of science.

The President urged those entitled to get their booster vaccinations ASAP and urged Americans to get their first vaccinations if they haven’t already. Biden said the US already had all the tools to beat the Covid-19 pandemic.

White House Covid-19 Response Coordinator Jeff Zients said Friday the U.S. has secured enough supplies for every American to get a Covid-19 booster shot and that up to 20 million Americans have already completed the six-month Mark and therefore already entitled to the shot.

Zients said the Biden government is keen to provide booster shots as soon as possible to the most vulnerable Americans – especially residents and long-term care facility workers. Zients said eligible Americans could get a booster vaccination in approximately 80,000 locations across the country, including more than 40,000 local pharmacies.

The booster is also rolled out as the US will significantly increase the number of Covid-19 vaccines it will ship overseas from 2022 in an effort to end the pandemic around the world. Biden announced last week that the US is buying an additional 500 million Pfizer Covid-19 vaccines to donate to low- and lower-middle-income countries around the world. These vaccines bring the total number in the United States to over 1.1 billion vaccines donated to other countries.
