Four-Time Fittest Man on Earth, Rich Froning, Swears By ‘Optimised Breathing’

For Rich Froning, a four-time CrossFit Games champion – often referred to as “one of the fittest in history” – staying one step ahead of the competition is important. He previously attributed his success to intermittent fasting (“it raised my testosterone in about six months,” he said), but more recently he has also used an often overlooked part of exercise: regulated breathing.

More specifically, Froning has focused on how to best use his breathing during certain exercises, and uses regulated breathing as part of his programming prior to the team division of CrossFit games. “Recreation is king in a sport that is based around the clock,” said Froning Barbend. “Most importantly, when your heart rate and breathing get out of control, everything else falls apart.”

In addition to regulated breathing exercises and observing his heart rate, Froning also trains with an AIRWAAV, a “performance mouthpiece” that was developed as “the most efficient way to open the airways and optimize performance”. There is also some clever science behind this – a study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning found a “significant positive effect of respiratory muscle training (RMT) on athletic performance results in time trials”. In addition, this was backed up by a study on the Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry, which shows that mouthpieces can make a “significant difference” to any athlete looking to get ahead. For Froning, his mouthpiece is “bringing awareness to breathing” and helps him master the challenges and “curve balls” at the CrossFit Games.

Ryan Atkins, a world OCR champion, also noted the benefits of using an adaptive mouthpiece, saying, “My FTP (Functional Threshold Power) appeared to have increased 20 watts overnight.”

Whether other high-performance athletes will follow Froning and Atkins’ lead remains to be seen, but this could become a disruptive force in the functional fitness world.
